Airport Bar Tab Dispute Leads to Arrest After Physical Struggle

On November 14, 2023 officers responded to a call at an airport restaurant about a man refusing to pay a bar tab of roughly $130. The subject asserted he was a Marine Corps veteran and insisted he had already settled the bill with a credit card. When asked for a receipt, he declined to produce one and displayed aggressive behavior toward the officers.

De‑escalation Attempt

To verify the payment, officers asked the subject to show his banking app. He displayed transactions from unrelated businesses such as “Taco and Tequila,” “HD Supply,” and “Skydiving Center,” but could not locate a receipt for the current establishment. After acknowledging the misunderstanding, he agreed to walk with the officers to the restaurant so the bill could be resolved. He said, “If you could show me that credit card receipt I will tell them that they're mistaken and that you did pay it.”

Physical Altercation and Arrest

While walking toward the restaurant, the subject became combative, asking an officer, “Have you been to war?” He then resisted physically, grabbed an officer’s radio, and was taken to the ground. Officers used their weight to subdue him until he could be handcuffed. One officer, Austin, noted the subject’s size, saying, “I’m 230 lb of fat right, there’s a yellow and black line in there sir, step in there to that yellow and black line.”

Post‑Arrest Processing

At the jail, the subject refused to answer standard intake questions about his personal history and medical status. Officers observed signs of intoxication and speculated the subject might suffer from PTSD, though no medication was found on his person. The original charge of theft of service was supplemented by additional charges stemming from his physical resistance.
